I adore J.Crew. Can you blame me? Their style is classic, feminine, and clean. What I don’t love so much are their prices. While their basic cotton tees are somewhat reasonable, their blazers, cashmere and denim are downright outlandish. But don’t let the MSRP fool you, there are definitely ways to get around the system. You just have to be patient and follow a few simple rules.
Always look on the website and/or call the store before you go shopping. This really applies for almost all stores, but particularly for J.Crew. They post their deals online at the top of the site in red or orange writing. The online deals are not always the same as their in-store deals, so if the deal header doesn’t say “Online and in stores…”, I’d recommend calling. Their in-store deals are often even better than the online ones!
When you get into the store, head straight for the sale area. All J.Crews have a sale section. Don’t even bother looking at the beautiful full price merchandise. Bypass it and go for the racks of markdowns. Keep in mind, all of J.Crew’s sale items are final sale. So don’t buy anything on sale if you aren’t sure you love it.
Wait for that extra sale on top of the sale. They have these often. Just within the past month, I’ve seen an additional 30, 40, and 50% off their final sale items. These sales could last anywhere from 24 hours to 2 weeks. You just have to keep your eyes peeled. This is my favorite time to shop, but you can’t wait. The racks will get picked through quickly.
Become a teacher or a student, or just take one shopping. Teachers and students get an additional 10% off of every purchase. My mom’s a teacher. She’s also my favorite person to shop with. Taking advantage of her discount is just icing on the cake!
Check the price of the item online before you get to the register. This is why I love smart phones (among many other reasons). J.Crew in store will match the price of an item online. So, if the item is cheaper online, they’ll give it to you for that price! Just do a quick google search in the fitting room for the style number to see if it’s lower online. It’s well worth the extra time!
If they don’t have your size, they’ll find it for you. Another amazing thing about J.Crew is their ‘Search and Find’ system. If you see an item in the store that you like, they’ll take your address and credit card info and have their system search the national database to see if they can find that item in another store for you. If they can find it, they’ll ship it to your house for free.
Free shipping from the store. They have a $5 flat rate shipping fee on orders of $150 plus online, but if you go into the store and order online through them, you get free shipping. The incentive for the store is that they get credit for your purchase. It definitely works out in your favor, especially if you find a killer deal on a pair of cords like I did here, for example.
As always, develop good relationships with the sales staff. They do an amazing job with their customer service at J.Crew. It is always a joy to shop there. But sales associates will definitely go the extra mile for you if you are polite and kind. Plus it’s good karma. Just do it.
Lastly, many stores offer a credit card and J.Crew is no different. You can find all the details about it here, but the perks are just not worth it for the budget shopper. I will not be getting one any time soon.
