I hope you all had a fantastic summer, I know I did! We did a lot of visiting family, swimming and of course, shopping. I spent a lot of time trying to figure out my next move with the blog. I want to be really transparent about where my head is at right now, so here it goes. I really love what we’ve been doing on here, but after about 3.5 years of blogging, I still am not making enough money doing the blog that it even supports itself. Now I’m sure I could do things differently and I’m certain there are ways I could do things to monetize it more, but at the end of the day the one thing I’m sure of is that I need to try something new. As much as I love writing and shopping, I am also a full-time mom with another part-time job, so I don’t have a ton of extra time. And I would love to work myself out of that part-time job and support myself completely with this blog and related ventures.
That being said, I have decided to start selling merchandise on the blog. I am going to start small, by selling a necklace I sourced overseas. This has been quite a learning process, and one that I’m very excited about! First I had to find out where to source items that is trustworthy, so off to www.alibaba.com I went! I found several pieces I really like, and because I don’t have a lot of money to throw at this idea yet, I went with a simple, non-precious metal piece. I ordered 120 pieces which were sent to my house. I then rebranded and packaged them, and sent them off to a company who really knows what they’re doing; Amazon. My goal is to source things through Amazon for a while, until my brand is built up enough that I can pull away and have my own self-sustaining website. This is not the cheapest way for me to do this, but that way customers can get free shipping (if they’re Prime members, and if their collective order is over $35 if they aren’t), and Amazon handles all customer service issues. That is enough to make me want to throw some extra money at them.
For now I think I’ll focus on selling jewelry, as the margins are good and it’s less name-brand dependent than clothing. As soon as I can figure out a way to sell the name-brand fashion pieces we love on Fashion Finds on a Dime for a decent profit (while still offering significant discounts over competitor sites), I will add clothing in as well. I’m really excited about this new chapter! I look forward to sharing this process with you, as I’m sure I’ll make many missteps along the way. It should, at the very least, be entertaining!
Here’s how you can support me:
Please buy my necklace, Turquoise and Gold Fashion Necklace (less than $10), and then leave me an amazing review (This part is key! The more reviews, the higher I show up in the rankings!). Thank you all for joining me in this adventure!
